It’s a common myth that laser hair removal doesn’t work for darker skin tones — and while that may have been true when the FDA first approved the treatment back in the 1990s, technology has come a long way. Outdated lasers once carried higher risks for clients with more melanin-rich skin, but today’s advanced laser devices make laser hair removal safe and effective for every skin type.
At our clinic, we use both the Alexandrite laser for lighter skin and the Nd: YAG laser for darker tones. The Nd: YAG technology features a longer wavelength and lower melanin absorption rate, allowing us to target the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding skin.
Our master clinicians customize every session to your unique skin tone and hair type to ensure precise, lasting results. Whether your goal is smoother skin, more confidence, or ditching the razor for good, we’ll guide you safely through the process.

Nearly 50 years ago, dermatologist Dr. Thomas Fitzpatrick developed a scale to classify how different skin tones respond to light—now known as the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale. This scale helps laser practitioners safely tailor laser treatments based on your skin’s natural sensitivity and pigmentation.
The six Fitzpatrick types range from very fair skin that always burns (Type I) to deep skin tones that never burn and tan easily (Type VI). Because many of us have beautifully diverse backgrounds, your skin type may fall between categories—another reason a personalized consultation is essential.
For your safety and best results, we always assess your skin tone carefully before a laser hair removal treatment.

While Dr. Fitzpatrick's scale was originally designed to assess UV sensitivity, it now plays an important role in determining how different skin types respond to laser treatments. Individuals with darker skin may require slightly adjusted settings or a series of treatments spaced strategically for optimal, even results.
Beyond skin tone, factors such as pregnancy, medications, or a history of keloid scarring can influence your candidacy. During your consultation, our expert clinicians will review your health history, evaluate your skin and hair, and perform a small test spot to ensure your skin will respond well to the treatment.
At Kalon Laser Aesthetics, we use state-of-the-art laser systems designed to safely and effectively treat deeper skin tones. Devices like the Nd:YAG laser wavelength—known for its precision and lower melanin absorption—allow us to target hair follicles without affecting the surrounding skin. This technology minimizes the risk of burns or discoloration while delivering smooth, lasting results.
Our clinicians are highly trained in customizing laser settings for each individual, ensuring that clients with darker complexions experience the same comfort, safety, and effectiveness as any other skin type.
