Laser Hair Removal Pre-Treatment Checklist

Preparing for a laser hair removal treatment doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. In fact, the right preparation is one of the simplest ways to ensure you walk into your local med spa feeling confident, prepared, and ready to get started.

At Kalon Laser Aesthetics, we feel that informed clients feel calmer, more confident, and ultimately have better outcomes. Below is our expert laser technician-approved laser hair removal pre-treatment checklist—designed to guide you step by step before your first (or next) appointment.

Your Laser Hair Removal Pre-Treatment Checklist

1. Shave the Treatment Area (At the Right Time)

Shaving is one of the most important pre-treatment steps.

-Shave the area 12–24 hours before your appointment unless otherwise instructed.

-Use a new razor (be careful) and gentle shaving cream, soap, or gel. We don’t recommend trying a new shaving gel or soap; just use something your body is used to to avoid possible redness or skin irritation.

-Avoid waxing or tweezing for at least 4 weeks before the laser—the laser needs the hair follicle intact to work effectively.

Note: If you’re unsure whether you should shave a sensitive area, our team is always happy to guide you.

2. Avoid Sun Exposure (Yes—This Matters)

Laser treatments target pigment, which means sun exposure can increase the risk of irritation or discoloration.

-Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least 2 weeks before treatment.

-If sun exposure is unavoidable, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily to the area being treated.

Arriving with untanned skin allows the laser to safely target the hair follicle—not your skin.

3. Pause Certain Skincare Products

Some ingredients can make your skin more sensitive to laser energy.

-Stop using retinoids, retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide on the treatment area 5–7 days prior.

-Avoid exfoliating scrubs or chemical peels before your appointment.

Think gentle, hydrated, and calm skin.

4. Review Medications and Supplements

Certain medications can increase photosensitivity.

-Inform your provider if you are taking antibiotics, acne medications (such as isotretinoin), or photosensitizing medications.

-When in doubt, disclose all medications and supplements during your consultation.

Your safety always comes first, and transparency ensures we can customize your treatment appropriately.

5. Stay Hydrated

Well-hydrated skin responds better to laser treatments.

-Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment.

-Moisturize! Hydrated skin can improve your comfort level and healing process.

This is one of the easiest (and most overlooked) preparation steps.

6. Arrive with Clean Skin

On the day of your appointment:

-Avoid lotions, oils, deodorant, makeup, or fragrance on the treatment area.

-Come with clean, dry skin so the laser can work efficiently and safely.

If needed, our laser technician can cleanse the area before treatment.

7. Wear Comfortable Clothing

Choose clothing that won’t irritate treated skin afterward. We recommend wearing breathable fabrics like organic cotton.

Loose, non-toxic fabrics are ideal—especially for areas like the bikini line, underarms, or legs.

Avoid tight clothing that may rub or trap heat post-treatment.

Comfort is part of the luxury experience.

Special Considerations for Melanin-Rich Skin and Freckles

Laser hair removal can be safely performed on darker skin tones and freckled skin when done correctly and with advanced technology.

-Always inform your provider if you have melanin-rich skin, freckles, or a history of hyperpigmentation.

-Settings and laser type may be adjusted to prioritize safety while maintaining effectiveness.

-Sun avoidance and strict pre-care are especially important to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation.

At Kalon Aesthetics, treatments are always tailored—never one-size-fits-all.

What Not to Do Before Laser Hair Removal

For best results, avoid the following:

-Waxing, tweezing, or threading.

-Tanning or sunburns.

-Using self-tanner.

-Applying irritating skincare products.

-Arriving with a product on your skin.
